ISOP performs ‘Oliver’ for ‘Make a Wish’

The InternationalSchool recently presented the musical ‘Oliver’, based on the story of ‘Oliver Twist’ by Charles Dickens. The musical was performed on Thursday and Friday the 2nd and 3rd of April to large, very appreciative, audiences of parents and friends. The producers were Mrs Julia Bell, Curriculum Development Adviser, and Mrs Maria Ioannou, Drama teacher. Music was provided by Mrs Galina Dimova, the school’s Head of Music. Their aim was to involve the whole school ‘family’ and so students from the primary and secondary departments worked together with members of staff, parents and friends to present the musical. The students were eager to present ‘Oliver’ as a special entertainment for their parents and friends but also wanted to help other, less fortunate children. At the end of each performance there was a voluntary collection and parents donated more than €1,000 for ‘Make a Wish’. This charity grants ‘wishes’ by providing special treats for children with life-threatening and often terminal illnesses.

The producers cast the students as workhouse children, dancers and flower sellers. The challenging roles of Oliver and the Artful Dodger were played superbly by student from each department. Adult parts such as Fagin, Nancy, Bill Sykes etc. were playeda by staff, parents and friends of the school. This very positive interaction between adults and students set the tone for an excellent production. Members of staff made a wonderful range of costumes that reflected those worn in Victorian time. The scenery and ‘props’ were produced by other members of the Production Team. This team included two parents who volunteered their expertise as choreographer and voice coach respectively.
