The International School of Paphos (ISOP) and the Greek Theatre Club invite you to experience the world of teenagers through the theatrical production “Adolescent Entrapment”. Written and directed by Stefani Mavrokordatou, Drama Teacher at ISOP, the performance is part of the 36th Pancyprian School Theatre Games and will take place on Thursday, 27th March 2025, at 8:00pm in the Sports Hall.

Join us to experience a powerful performance where inner struggles, societal expectations and personal battles come to life. Witness how our young protagonists confront the constraints holding them back, embarking on a passionate journey towards freedom. You are invited to an evening that celebrates the timeless courage of teenagers breaking free from their chains!

Although ISOP is an English-speaking school, it consistently promotes the Greek language and culture through various activities. This will be ISOP’s sixth participation in the Pancyprian School Theatre Games, having achieved great success in the past, including 1st place in 2023 and 3rd place in 2022. We look forward to another performance filled with impactful messages.

This year’s competition features 53 secondary and technical schools, both public and private- from Nicosia, Larnaca, Famagusta, Limassol and Paphos- showcasing works from contemporary Greek and international theatre, as well as ancient drama.

This competition offers hundreds of students each year the opportunity to discover the beauty of theatrical creation. Through dedication, effort and collaboration with fellow theatre group members and their teachers, students craft and deliver remarkable theatrical performances.

A short synopsis of the play

“Adolescent Entrapment” is inspired by real-life experiences of teenagers and explores the challenges they face in modern society. Through six characters-teenagers- the play presents scenes that highlight issues such as family conflicts, parental divorce, school bullying, low self-esteem due to societal expectations, academic pressure, social isolation, cyberbullying and negative influences.

The play begins with the teenagers appearing as “prisoners” inside a cage, symbolising the sense of entrapment they feel in difficult situations. The “wild animals” serve as a metaphor for both the challenges they face and the harsh behaviour of individuals lacking empathy. Each scene focuses on a different struggle-portraying the psychological pressure, pain and loneliness young people experience. Also noteworthy is their need for acceptance, self-awareness and support.

In the end, the characters realise that the power to break free from their “cages” lies within them.

Message from the Writer & Director

The year 2020 was a difficult time for all of us- full of both social and personal challenges. One pertinent issue became clear—each of us experiences situations in different ways, as was evident during the lockdown period. For me, creativity flourished in front of a screen with unlimited time at my disposal. A new play was born… Inspired by the ‘confinement’ of quarantine, I began thinking about other forms of entrapment in life, both literal and metaphorical.

Working closely with teenagers, I realised that this stage of life is particularly challenging, filled with overwhelming concerns and difficult issues—some so intense that young people feel ‘trapped’ in situations they cannot speak about or seek help for.

That is why I wanted my play’s message to be one of hope, encouraging teenagers to face their struggles with courage, to seek help and to believe in themselves.

This is an emotional and dynamic production that realistically portrays the challenges of adolescence, promoting awareness and understanding.
