So by now, all our students have received their school reports or external examination results. Congratulations to everyone. We are pleased that our graduating students have their results and are making their next move in their career journey.

If your child has the results they wanted, great; if they do not – it’s ok as you can do things to make changes.

How to manage ‘disappointing’ exam results: If your child is unhappy with their exam results, it can be tough to deal with.

Here are some approaches that can help: If your child is happy to show you their results statement, you might find it helpful to have a look, just in case they have misread or misunderstood, or overlooked something. Accept their feelings, whatever they are – disappointment, anger, embarrassment, bravado. Their feelings are neither right nor wrong- they just are. Don’t offer immediate judgement, or solutions, or even reassurance – there will be plenty of time for conversations later. Reflect back on how they are feeling to show you have understood, for example, “I can see you’re disappointed with the Maths result.” Let them know you love them through highs and lows. Big hugs are good (although probably very embarrassing in public). Show you’re on their side – it could be something small like going out together to their favourite place to spend some time together. Give yourself, and them, some breathing space and time to reflect.

Ask us at the school to help your child explore any possible next steps, such as re-takes, re-marking or alternative courses. The school is open for appointments- either with the Examinations Department, Careers Department or a member of the Senior Management Team.

If your child is feeling disappointed with their performance, they might also be embarrassed. Agree with your child on how they want their results discussed with family and friends, if at all. Above all, remember that examinations are only one aspect of life and everyone achieves in different areas.

If you need help and support, please do contact the school. We are here for you.
