During STEAM Week, our Pre-Reception classes embarked on a magical learning journey inspired by the story of Tangled. Through this theme, the children explored creativity, imagination, and collaboration across a variety of lessons and activities.
From the very first day, the children were introduced to the idea of building their own castle using materials available in the classrooms. What started as a simple construction quickly grew into something much more meaningful. Each day, the children revisited their creation, improving and expanding it with new ideas. They worked together, shared their thoughts, listened to one another, and found creative solutions to challenges along the way. This process encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.
The classrooms and the playground area soon transformed into a magical world of fantasy, where imagination came to life. Through role play, the children brought the story to life, becoming Rapunzel, Flynn, Pascal, and Maximus. Using the castle they had built, they recreated scenes, invented new storylines, and solved problems inspired by the story. This allowed them to connect imagination with real experiences, developing both their language and social skills.
STEAM learning was also explored through hands-on experiments. The children engaged in colour-mixing activities, discovering how different colours combine to create new ones—bringing a sense of “magic” into their learning. To extend this experience, they also used tablets to explore colours digitally, experimenting with mixing shades and creating their own designs. This introduced an early understanding of technology as a creative and learning tool.
Art played a significant role in our activities. The children designed and created costumes using a variety of materials and some heroes of the story. These creative opportunities helped them express themselves while developing fine motor skills.
Throughout the week, English was naturally integrated into all activities, as the children communicated, shared ideas, and expressed their thoughts through storytelling and play.
Most importantly, this experience brought joy, excitement, and a sense of achievement to the children. Their smiles, enthusiasm, and ability to work together showed the true value of introducing STEAM learning at an early age. It allowed them to explore, create, and believe in the magic of their own ideas.
